Before we opened our showroom, I carried out a little “mystery shopping” experience in bathroom showrooms in our area. What I was mainly after, was what questions will the designers ask me about my new bathroom.
And once I received a lot of client-led: “What are you thinking of having” and “What is your budget” I was never asked how I want to feel in my dream bathroom.
I made a mental note of that, as FEELINGS are what our showroom was created on. “How do we want the customer to FEEL when they enter, what EMOTIONS will arise?” were the monumental questions that were guiding us through creation of the shop interior.
Bathroom industry seems to be still very much product oriented yet perhaps in the world of focus on Emotional Intelligence, FEELINGS should be on top of the list of questions of every creative designer?
Could bathroom creation go beyond the five human senses and speak to our EMOTIONS?
Materials, shapes and objects, textures and colours, together thoughtfully chosen, can create astonishing spaces. But how do they make you FEEL? Would you make the choice based on what you see and touch, or would you allow yourself to listen to your bodily sensations when choosing?
Because you may find that the most attractive bathroom design doesn’t deliver the desired feeling once installed. The choice of material may be trendy and alluring yet it can FEEL cold or odd, once in situ.
Investigating desired FEELINGS and incorporating them into a creation will deliver a space that truly resonates with your client. At the end of the day, together with the bedroom, the bathroom is the most intimate space of your household.
