We have recently had a request for a design of a dark bathroom.
Our customer, who was in his 60’, shared the following bathroom design brief: “I wish to “smell” tobacco when I walk in. I see myself in silk robes and pantoffels, holding a glass of whisky. I’m a peculiar man. This space is for me only”.
This quirky request got me excited and could hardly wait to begin the design.
After surveying client’s 1930’s full of character house in Alderley Edge, I tuned into the sources of masculine energy and put together a bathroom concept which I called “Tobacco and gold”, inspired by the client’s brief.
In my mind, I already created a kind of a secret place with dimmed lights, plenty of antique gold, a variety of dark wood and metallic finishes.
Textures and rich colours of darker hughes became my focus and I spent a lot of time trying for find the perfect tile. Because….
…creating a dark bathroom space can be very tricky and it’s easy to get it wrong.
Balance is the key to creating a beautiful depth of the dramatic look without making it look depressing.
I settled on Black Beauty bathroom tile 600×120 by RAK Ceramics which has golden and white veins running through each tile; then paired it with a metallic finish rusty browns for the other part of the bathroom walls and floor. See the moodboard above for both bathroom tiles samples.
Both bathroom tile ranges created comforting and moody atmosphere with just the right amount of darkness.
I chose the Dansani Calidris range in dark wood for the vanity unit, with a basin in brown stone to add even more depth. The abundant look was created by a golden finished chandelier and oversized Docklands mirror by Origins Living in golden frame.
The shower area provided understated privacy with a fluted glass panel in a golden frame. All very dramatic but stylish, even generous.
I picked matt black floating toilette and brushed brass towel radiator and brassware.
Have a look for yourself.
I realise it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, or should I say, not everyone’s glass of whiskey…..
Lots of love,
Kora x
